--- Welcome to the East Bend and Northern ---

O Scale railroading in a small space.

This is my On30 project. On30 is an O scale [1:48] model railroad with the rails spaced 30 scale inches apart. This makes the EB&N a 30 inch narrow gauge. The EB&N is a freelanced, fictional line set in central California. The Layout Journal shows how the project is progressing. The layout has moved many times over the last several years. This has been facilitated by its sectional design. Originally of 1x4 wood frame design, the layout is transitioning to a light-weight, foam board modular design.

One of the attractions to modeling an O scale narrow gauge is that fact that you can use relatively small radius curves (at least in O scale terms). This allows you to pack the track into a smaller space while preserving the detailing available in a 1:48 scale model.

Rather than sections, the layout now consists of modules with standardized interfaces. The first of these modules was built to be part of the California Central Coast module group. Since then several others have been constructed for use with that group. These modules are much easier to transport than sections built using traditional wood framing techniques. Since mobility will be in the EB&N's future, modular construction will make relocation less challenging. Here's a rough diagram of the planned track plan.

The engines and rolling stock are an eclectic mix of scratch built, kits, kit bashed, and ready-to-run products. My older equipment saw many hours of service 20+ years ago at the former location the East Bay Model Engineers Society (EBMES). Many of my oldest engines are traditional DC and will remain that way. More recent additions are DCC including several with sound. As a result, I've set up the electrics on the layout so that they can easily be switched from DCC to DC.

At the links below, you can find a photo journal of the EB&N layout as well as photos of some of the engine and rolling stock projects in progress on my bench.

What's New:

12/31/2008 - With the last update being in June 2007, a new update is long overdue. The EB&N is alive and well. As far as being a functional home layout, that is a project for the future. Most of my train time has been consumed with the California Central Coast group.
